Carolina Forest-Timberland Football (Aug. 23) -- Is it football season already? For me, at least, it started with a bang when I had a drop-dead 10:30 p.m. deadline for a game that started at 7:30. The game ended at 10:10. I finished up the story and stats, ran to the field, got a couple quick quotes from the Carolina Forest coach (who had just been drubbed for nearly three hours), ran back to the press box and filed by 10:22. I did have to call my editor and relay some rushing stats for the box, thanks to Timberland having 124 different guys run the ball.

Guy Daniels Memorial Surf-Off (Aug. 14) -- A look at the foundation of the Surf-Off, which celebrated its 10th anniversary that weekend. Daniels died at the age of 19 in 1999 after suffering an unexplainable heart attack while jogging.

Waccamaw's chance (May 21) -- For the second night in a row, a girls team from Waccamaw is eliminated from state title contention when the Warriors drop the championship deciding game to Crescent. (NOTED: I doubled up on the assignment, covering the Crescent angle for another of my old shops, the Anderson Independent-Mail.)

Waccamaw falls (May 20) -- The girls soccer team at Waccamaw high school fails to unseat the perennial Lower State champions during the South Carolina Class AA playoffs. (NOTED: The same story also ran in the Charleston Post and Courier as part of a trade-off between the papers.)

"We're like brothers" (May 11) -- Two boys soccer players at Socastee High School have thrived together and have parlayed their successes into NCAA Division-I scholarships.

Conway cruises (May 7) -- Gamer on Conway's baseball team after it crushes No. 1 seed Beaufort in the district championship game.

Waccamaw domination (May 6) -- Waccamaw's tennis excellence appeared bound to continue. (NOTED: The team steamrolled to another state title.)

Difference maker (April 30) -- A look at one of the most dominant softball pitchers in the state.

Seahawk Invitational (April 25) -- A local golf team cues up for a state tournament appearance. (NOTED: St. James finished second in the state in the tournament.)

after the regular starter is held out. (NOTED: I had 7 minutes to write
this one due to deadline constraints.)

Freeman's foray (April 19) -- Myrtle Beach Pelicans first baseman Freddie Freeman will be playing for the Atlanta Braves someday, as long as he can navigate the Carolina League.
